Beloved Shelter Dog Is Thrilled To Walk Down Red Carpet Into New Mom’s Arms

Everyone was crying, but we were all overjoyed for him.

Not every dog adopted from a shelter gets a red carpet sendoff. But for Bowie the shepherd mix, who had spent more than a year looking for his forever family, it was the most perfect farewell his Whatcom Humane Society (WHS) pals could imagine.

Bowie swiftly won over the hearts of every employee and volunteer at the animal rescue on his first day on the job.

Andrea Merrill, Whatcom Humane Society’s development associate, told The Dodo, “He was incredibly, incredibly lovely.”

The personnel of the animal shelter treated Bowie as if he were their own for about a year and a half. In addition to playing with him at the rescue, volunteers took him on treks to give him a break from the shelter.

“He’s one of those dogs that need the investment of an entire community,” said Merrill. “This is why [the adoptions] never worked out…”

During this period, Bowie received a number of adoption applications, but none of them were suitable.

“He needed someone who was willing to accept that he is a great dog who is still learning his manners,” said Merrill.

When an adoption fell through, Bowie would immediately return to the shelter. And, as perplexed as they were as to why no one had adopted him yet, his humane society pals welcomed him back with open arms.

Approximately one year into Bowie’s enrollment at WHS, a local college student discovered his story on social media and began following his progress.

“She was completely in love with him, but it was not the proper time,” said Merrill.

Six months after graduating from college, the woman obtained her first job. When she returned to WHS and discovered that Bowie was still available, she promptly submitted an adoption application.

“It’s a classic case of ‘the right person discovered the perfect dog,'” said Merrill. And everyone at Whatcom was so excited for Bowie’s new chapter to begin.

Although red carpet farewells are not a common occurrence at the humane society, the employees felt it was only fitting for their very own four-legged celebrity. In addition, he had so many friends who wanted to say their final goodbyes.

For Bowie, WHS employees put out a red carpet from the kennels to the door. They created unique signs for him and lined up on the carpet to bid farewell to their dear friend.

“Everyone was crying, but we were all so thrilled and pleased for him,” said Merrill. It was a very touching way for us to say goodbye to David Bowie.

After exiting the shelter on a red carpet, Bowie went directly to his new home.

Bowie can be seen snuggling with his mother, who adores him more and more with each passing day when he is not hiking or paying attention in training classes.

“She totally adores him,” stated Merrill. And Bowie is overjoyed.
