Food is wonderful! It’s so wonderful that we often forget that consuming too much of it may have unfavorable consequences for us and those around us.
What’s worse, these challenges frequently go unnoticed until you’re looking in the mirror or putting on your favorite pair of jeans when it finally hits you. But how does a dog consciously know when he’s eaten too much?
Drax from Queensland, Australia, could have done with checking himself out in the mirror.
A funny photo of the young Labrador with a whole door on his back was recently posted to FB, and it quickly went viral.
It’s a clear sign of how much his owners love him, but life hasn’t always been this way for Drax.
When Charmaine Hulley’s sister discovered Drax on the streets of Queensland, Australia, he was a homeless pup left to his own devices. Charmaine’s sister didn’t hesitate to save him because he was in poor health and malnourished.
Hulley was living with her sister and four small dogs at the time, and she realized how easily Drax adjusted to his new family, bonding with everyone. It’s not uncommon for street dogs to be fearful of other pups, but Drax was not one of them.
He soon made friends with his brothers and sisters, and he seemed to settle into his new family’s happy life. Drax adored his siblings and would often follow them around or share naps with them.
On the other hand, Hulley was planning to step out on her own and decided to bring Drax with her. She didn’t want Drax to be alone, and she tried to get him a new dog pal.
After a few years, Hulley returned to her sister’s home, accompanied by Drax and his new brother. He had gained a few pounds without realizing it after transitioning from street dog to spoiled lab life!
The now-famous FB picture was snapped when he got trapped after following his smaller cousins through the doggy door after a day of playing in the yard. For Drax and his parents, it was a wake-up call that he needed to shed a few pounds. Charmaine recalls:
“Dad came home early and saw half the doggy door panel on the ground and looked inside, and Drax came wandering down the hallway very casually with it on him. I looked over, and Drax was on the stairs looking at me … my mouth dropped.”
Drax wasn’t sure what had happened at first… However, a frustrated Drax (who is unaware of his size and strength) ended up ripping the entire door off its hinges in a desperate attempt to escape!
Charmaine acknowledges that he may be “a little too loved,” but to her credit, love and food weren’t always a luxury Drax was afforded. Even though the doggy-door incident was funny, it served as a wake-up call for all, and Hulley has promised to put Drax on a diet.
Hulley spoiled Drax rotten to make up for the many times he had to go without, and as a result, he gained weight. He’s now on a strict diet to ensure that such mishaps won’t happen again. Good luck, Drax!
