Police See Animal Drowning In Canal And Make A Split-Second Decision

Meet Sarge, a senior rescue dog who has always been adventurous yet occasionally gets into trouble. Sarge generally manages to get out of sticky situations by himself, but after becoming stuck in a canal recently, he really needed assistance.

Officers Sara Gianino and Allyson Steinkamp hurried to the site after receiving a complaint about a dog having difficulty swimming in the canal from the Lighthouse Point Police Department (LHPPD). They finally found the frightened dog after circling about for a while.

Officer Sara Gianino told The Dodo, “He couldn’t get out because the sea wall was so high and the tide was so low.” And it didn’t appear that he could continue swimming for very long.

The officers rapidly searched the canal’s edge for a place to stand, but they were unable to locate anything sturdy enough to do so. As they were running out of time, they selected the only choice.

The LHPPD posted on FB, “It was decided that a broken dock would provide her the best chance to get the pup out of the sea.”

The terrifying rescue can be seen here:

The cops made a quick choice after navigating along the damaged dock.

Gianino recalled, “We quickly pulled off our gear and we dived in to save him.”

First to dive in, Gianino made an effort to hoist the dog up to her mate on the dock. Unaware family happened to pass by on their boat as she was doing this. Charles King, one of the group, noticed what was happening and jumped into the water to aid.

Sarge was taken by King and Gianino and swam to the dock with them. Steinkamp, perched on the shattered dock, reached out for the 80-pound pup as they collaborated to hoist him out of the sea.

Fortunately, Steinkamp managed to grab Sarge by the collar and yank him toward her. As soon as his paws hit the pier, Sarge’s tail began to wag with excitement at being saved. Sarge was welcomed by Steinkamp with a couple light pats on the back assuring him that everything would be alright.

Gianino remarked, “He was so thrilled to get out.” He seemed so upbeat.

Sarge was immediately reunited with Jenny, his “lover,” and his mother, Alex Griffin.

Thankfully, the canine adventurer is now again napping with his family and chewing on his favorite toys in safety at home. And from now on, his humans will be watching him closely to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble again.
