Shelter dog saves best friend moments before euthanasia after hugging photo goes viral

Sometimes, life becomes so cruel for man’s best friend when too many dogs end up at shelters. While for some, a new chapter begins as they are adopted, for others, the situation becomes heartbreaking as their only remaining option is being put down. As a dog lover, I cry every time I see a dog in such circumstances. However, as much as we want to do something to help these poor creatures, sometimes we feel powerless.

For Kala and Keira, two dogs at Atlanta-based Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, the fate seemed sealed. They were on their way to being euthanized as no one was willing to adopt them, even though they were such loving and well-behaved pups.

The pair were in desperate need of a new home and time was running out, so shelter volunteers gave it one more go at finding them one. They shared a photo of the pair cuddled up on FB in their last ditch effort to rescue them.

This photo captured a moment of fear among two girls, Keira and Kala. The caption read “I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next, and I won’t be as brave,”

And they did just that, as the powerful picture went viral in mere minutes. In less than two hours since the photo went public on FB, Kala and Keira’s savior had just stepped in.

“There are no words to express how glad we are that these two besties are safe and together,” the shelter staff wrote.
